A copy of the Fairness in Billing Committee proposal for 2026 is now available for public information and review.

The work of the committee will be tabled until the fall due to other matters requiring the attention of the trustees at this time; however, public feedback is still welcome and encouraged during this period.

Fairness in Billing Committee Proposal for Water Tolls May 13 2026

The Hedley Improvement District has posted the draft 2027 Water, Fire Protection, and Street Lighting Budgets for public review in advance of their consideration by the Board of Trustees.

Residents are invited to review the attached draft budgets and submit any comments or questions prior to the Regular Monthly Meeting on Monday, August 17, 2026, at which time the Trustees will consider their approval.

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS – WATER QUALITY ADVISORY

On recommendation of Interior Health, HEDLEY IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT Water Office has issued this advisory effective JUNE 24, 2026 due to:

Arsenic level having breached the Maximum Acceptable Concentration   for three consecutive tests.

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE…

Residents with weakened immune systems, &/or wishing additional protection should take precautions when drinking, washing fruits & vegetables, food preparation, making beverages or ice, when brushing teeth or making baby formula,  and use an alternate, safe source of water.

Long term exposure to elevated levels of arsenic can lead to an increased risk of cancer (lung, bladder, liver, skin). Other health considerations include skin, vascular, and neurological effects.  Individuals that have long term exposure are advised to seek an alternate source of drinking water for consumption.

BOILING WATER WILL NOT MAKE IT SAFE

IMPORTANT WATER RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT

Due to ongoing pump issues and unusually dry weather conditions, the Hedley Improvement District has implemented major water restrictions effective immediately.

Outdoor watering is limited to ONE (1) HOUR PER DAY between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM only.

No watering is permitted outside of these hours.

These restrictions are necessary to help conserve water and ensure adequate supply for essential household use and fire protection.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and will provide updates as conditions change.

The Board of Trustees

The Hedley Improvement District would like to inform residents that our most recent routine water test showed arsenic levels slightly above the allowable limit.

This result was only marginally higher than the standard, and at this time there is no indication of an immediate health concern.

As a precaution, we are conducting a second test — and a third if needed — to confirm the accuracy of the result and determine whether any further action is required.

These follow‑up tests are already underway.

We will share updates with the community as soon as the additional test results are received.

 The Hedley Improvement District (HID) is a local government established under the Local Government Act. Its authority and responsibilities are defined by the Act and by its Letters Patent. HID is a formal governing body with significant powers, including the authority to levy taxes and manage public assets. Because of this, serving as a trustee is a serious responsibility that requires commitment, accountability, and an understanding of good governance practices.

Before nominations proceed, it is important that all potential candidates understand the expectations of the role.

Trustees Are Responsible For:

• Exercising the powers and managing the property of HID, while leaving day‑to‑day administration to staff.
• Ensuring that drinking water meets all regulatory standards and that the system is operated safely and responsibly.
• Understanding HID’s functions and how the Improvement District fits within the broader framework of the Province of BC, the Regional District of Okanagan‑Similkameen (RDOS), and other government agencies.
• Practicing good governance, including collective decision‑making, confidentiality, and respect for process.
• Attending and fully participating in meetings, which are typically held monthly but may occur more frequently when required.
• Preparing for meetings by reviewing materials and educating themselves on issues before the Board.
• Undertaking specific tasks from time to time, depending on individual skills, interests, or expertise.

Expectations for Candidates

It is strongly recommended that anyone considering serving as a trustee attend a couple Board meetings beforehand. This helps potential candidates understand the workload, responsibilities, and governance structure they will be part of.

Serving as a trustee is an important public service role. It requires professionalism, respect for established rules, and a willingness to work collaboratively for the benefit of the community.
